# Ten Gods in BaZi Explained: The 10 Relationships That Shape Your Chart

The Ten Gods (十神) are the most practical part of BaZi — and the most misunderstood. They are not deities and they are not predictions. They are the ten relationships your Day Master can have with everything else in your chart: with your month, your year, your hour, and your Luck Cycles.

Once you know your Day Master (the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar), every other character in your chart becomes one of ten relationships to you. That is all the Ten Gods are: a complete grammar of how the rest of your life interacts with your core self. This framework was formalized in the classical texts — the Yuan Hai Zi Ping (淵海子平) and San Ming Tong Hui (三命通會) — and it is still the backbone of modern Four Pillars reading.

## The Five Relationships

Every Ten God belongs to one of five relationship groups, defined by how its element relates to your Day Master's element.

The generation and control cycles of the Five Elements determine which group a stem belongs to. ## The Ten Gods, One by One

### Direct Resource (正印) — The Teacher

The element that generates your Day Master is your Resource. When it has the opposite polarity, it is Direct Resource: formal education, mentorship, institutions, the kind of support you can rely on. A strong Direct Resource is the classic "good student" placement — people with it absorb knowledge easily and feel safest when they are learning.

### Indirect Resource (偏印) — The Intuition

Same generating element, same polarity. Indirect Resource is unconventional knowledge: intuition, unusual skills, autodidact learning. It is the researcher, the tinkerer, the person who understands systems nobody taught them. Where Direct Resource reads the textbook, Indirect Resource reads the pattern beneath it.

### Eating God (食神) — The Ease

The element your Day Master generates, with opposite polarity. Eating God is calm, generous expression — the talent that flows without forcing. People with strong Eating God are often gifted communicators and craftspeople. They create because creating is natural, not because they are proving something.

### Hurting Officer (傷官) — The Edge

Your generated element, same polarity. Hurting Officer is brilliance with an edge: sharp, restless, unwilling to repeat what has already been said. It produces the innovators and the iconoclasts. The same energy that makes someone exceptional can also make them impatient with authority and routine.

### Direct Wealth (正財) — The Steady Income

The element your Day Master controls, opposite polarity. Direct Wealth is earned, managed, predictable money — salary, savings, careful budgeting. It also represents the people and things you value and protect. Strong Direct Wealth is the classic dependable-earner pattern: steady, responsible, concrete.

### Indirect Wealth (偏財) — The Opportunity

Your controlled element, same polarity. Indirect Wealth is money that arrives in non-linear ways: business swings, windfalls, side streams, risk with a real upside. It is the entrepreneur's god. People with strong Indirect Wealth think in opportunities rather than budgets — which is a gift and a hazard in equal measure.

### Direct Officer (正官) — The Structure

The element that controls your Day Master, opposite polarity. Direct Officer is rules, reputation, duty, and the social order: the manager who is fair, the standard you hold yourself to. Strong Direct Officer reads as conscientious and respectable. Too much of it reads as a life lived for other people's approval.

### Seven Killings (七殺) — The Pressure

Your controlling element, same polarity. Seven Killings is pressure that does not negotiate: competition, deadlines, crisis, the adversary who makes you better or breaks you. People with strong Seven Killings are built for high-stakes environments. They perform under pressure precisely because they have always lived with it.

### Friend (比肩) — The Equal

The same element as your Day Master, same polarity. Friend is peers, siblings, equals — the people who reflect you back to yourself. Strong Friend energy makes you self-reliant and loyal, and sometimes stubborn: when your identity is your strongest asset, letting others in can feel like letting yourself down.

### Rob Wealth (劫財) — The Ally Who Takes

Your same element, opposite polarity. Rob Wealth is the collaborator who is also a competitor — the partner who helps you win and takes a share of the winnings. It shows up as intense teamwork, shared ventures, and occasionally as people who drain what you built. Its gift is loyalty in battle; its risk is losing yourself in the group.

## How to Read Your Distribution

The gods that appear most often in your chart are the plot of your life. A chart with three Authority characters and one Wealth character is a life organized around duty and reputation, with money as a supporting theme. A chart with three Wealth characters and one Resource character is a life organized around making and managing — with knowledge as the quiet foundation.

Two rules keep this honest:

1. **More is not always better.** A god present in extreme excess behaves like its shadow: too much Direct Resource becomes passivity, too much Hurting Officer becomes restlessness, too much Direct Officer becomes anxiety.
2. **Context beats count.** A single god in the right position — in your Month Branch, next to your Day Master, or in your current Luck Cycle — matters more than three copies of it in weak positions.

## Ten Gods and Your Luck Cycles

Your Luck Cycles are also Ten Gods. Every ten-year cycle is defined by the stem and branch of the cycle itself, which relate to your Day Master the same way everything else does.

This is why the same decade feels completely different for different people. A Wealth cycle is a season of earning and building for one person — and a season of exhaustion for another, whose chart turns Wealth into obligation. A Resource cycle is a decade of study and support for one person — and a decade of inertia for another.

## Classic Patterns: When Gods Combine

Individual gods are only the vocabulary. The classic patterns of BaZi — the ones the texts return to again and again — are sentences. These are a few of the most common combinations, all drawn from the tradition of the San Ming Tong Hui.

### Seven Killings + Resource (殺印相生)

Pressure becomes protection. When Seven Killings are present but a strong Resource element stands between them and your Day Master, the pressure is converted into wisdom and support: the crisis becomes a classroom. This is one of the most respected patterns in classical BaZi — it describes people who perform best when the stakes are high, precisely because the danger forces them to learn.

### Eating God + Wealth (食神生財)

Expression becomes income. When your Eating God is strong and Wealth is present, your natural talent has a direct route to money: the cook who owns the restaurant, the writer who sells the book. The pattern works because the output is relaxed and generous rather than forced — which is why it tends to compound over time.

### Hurting Officer + Resource (傷官配印)

Brilliance with a brake. Hurting Officer alone can be brilliant and restless — always tearing things down to rebuild them better. When a strong Resource is present, the restlessness gets a foundation: the innovator who can also finish, the critic who can also build. Classical texts treat this pairing as a cure for Hurting Officer's excesses.

### Wealth + Authority (財官雙美)

Steady income and steady standing. When Wealth and Authority are both strong, the chart describes someone who can manage money and reputation at the same time — the two things institutions reward. The risk of the pattern is the reverse of its gift: a life so organized around external markers that the inner life goes quiet.

### Rob Wealth Against Wealth (比劫奪財)

Collaboration and competition in the same room. When Rob Wealth is strong against a Wealth element, money and allies pull against each other: partnerships that both build and drain, teams that win together and split the winnings. The productive version of this pattern is joint ventures with clear rules. The unproductive version is always rescuing people who take.

## Three Charts, Three Plots

To make this concrete, here are three simplified examples. The names are illustrative composites, not real clients.

**The Coordinator.** A chart heavy in Direct Officer and Direct Resource, with little Hurting Officer. This person organizes, complies, and rises inside institutions. Their life question is not "can I succeed" but "whose definition of success am I living" — the classic burden of an Authority-heavy chart.

**The Builder.** A chart with strong Eating God and Indirect Wealth, and weak Authority. This person creates freely and monetizes opportunistically, but struggles with structure — deadlines, contracts, hierarchies. Their pattern describes the freelancer who is brilliant at the work and allergic to the paperwork.

**The Firefighter.** A chart with heavy Seven Killings and a single strong Resource. This person lives in crisis mode and thrives there — but only because the Resource element keeps converting pressure into learning. Without it, the same pressure would be pure burnout.

None of these three is better or worse. They are different machines with different fuel requirements. The Ten Gods tell you which machine you are; the rest of your chart tells you what fuel you need.

## Ten Gods in Relationships

The Ten Gods also describe how you relate to other people — and they are the traditional framework for BaZi compatibility. Direct Resource people are drawn to being taught and to teaching. Direct Officer people take responsibility for others and expect reliability in return. Eating God people give warmth freely and need space to create.

Compatibility in the classical view is not about matching the same gods. It is about complementary structures: one person's Wealth feeding another's Resource, one person's Officer balanced by another's Eating God. The strongest partnerships are usually the ones where each partner's excess is the other's deficiency — which is why the "same chart, same person" intuition is exactly backwards.

## A Note on Intensity

One caution runs through every classical treatment of the Ten Gods: intensity matters more than presence. A single Hurting Officer in a weak position is flavor. A Hurting Officer in your Month Branch, doubled in your Luck Cycle, is a theme of your life.

When you look at your own chart, do not count gods like trophies. Look for the one or two that are loudest — by repetition, by position, and by the decade you are in. Those are the characters in your story. The rest are the supporting cast.

## Common Questions


**Is the Ten Gods framework a form of divination?**
No. The Ten Gods are a descriptive system: they name the relationships between the characters in your chart. They describe patterns and tendencies; they do not predict events. The classical texts present them as a language for self-understanding, not a crystal ball.

**Which Ten God is the most important?**
The one that appears most strongly in your chart — by position, by repetition, and by the current Luck Cycle. For most people, the Month Branch is the most influential single position, because the month represents the environment you were born into.

**What is the difference between Direct and Indirect gods?**
Polarity. A Direct god (正) is the conventional version of its relationship: formal education, steady salary, clear rules. An Indirect god (偏) is the unconventional version: intuitive knowledge, entrepreneurial money, pressure without rules. Most people have both, in different proportions.

**Why do two people with the same Ten Gods live different lives?**
Because the gods are only half the story. Element strength, the positions of the gods across the four pillars, hidden stems, and the timing of Luck Cycles all modify the same distribution. ZWDS is a different system with different machinery — stars and palaces instead of stems and gods. But the life themes overlap: both systems describe wealth, authority, relationships, and expression. Not much, by itself. A missing god describes an area of life that does not arrive automatically — you will have to build it consciously. Someone without Wealth in the visible stems still earns money; they simply learn money management the hard way rather than by instinct. Missing gods become meaningful only when the Luck Cycles that carry them arrive, which is one reason timing matters so much.
